Biography

Throughout my life I was encouraged to become an educated woman, though many circumstances of my life seemed like looming obstacles in the eyes of many. I am an immigrant from Guatemala and came to the United States during the revolutionary upheaval of the 1980s. I began school knowing little English and faced many difficulties as a child, particulary coming from a low-income family.

However, through faith, leadership ability, determination and much hard work I was admitted to Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, which is one of the remaining seven sisters and is actually ranked fourth in liberal arts colleges and universites in the nation.

I share this information not to boast but to encourage others, especially my students, to raise their standards and reach for the best in all things despite the many challenges they may face. My experience has taught me that education is the key to social change. This belief has empowered me when I have felt like quitting and motivated me to help others from similar backgrounds.

After graduating I began working for the Upward Bound program, which is a free, pre-college preparation program for high school students.

As a counselor, I guide students to academic and career resources and opportunities, motivate them to attend college and help students evaluate their academic careers.

Speech Description

Everything I do in seminars or workshops is geared toward individualized attention, includes handouts, practice, games etc. I like to be creative and interact with people I am teaching and would generally not stand in front of a crowd and just speak (Unless time is limited.)

In resume writing, students learn to format, draft and use active, targeted language that will set their resume apart from others.

Interviewing/Business Protocol: Learning to respond intelligently and think on your toes comes naturally for some, but for most, interview skills must be developed. In this workshop I help the audience understand that effective presentation must be accompanied by a professional demeanor.

Networking is essential in this society. Students learn what networking is, the importance of socializing as a means of networking, the protocol and some strategies.
