America's Promise and the Five Promises
The five promises that are endorsed by the Arlington Alliance for Youth are keys to the development of Arlington as a City of Promise for our youth. You are encouraged to think about these goals as you formulate the project for your grants application.
- Caring Adults (How do we get more adults in Arlington to lead and mentor our youth?):
- Develop a new after school activity at a Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, or Girls Inc.
- Start a new youth club like Builders Club, K-kids, Key Club, Girl Scout troop, or Boy Scout troop.
- Adults and youth team up to teach members of a nursing home how to use the Internet
- Safe Places (How can we have more structured activities after school in safe places?):
- Develop a Neighborhood Watch program.
- Develop a sports team for intramural sports.
- Develop a musical activity for neighborhood talent.
- Organize "Play & Learn Days" during summer for elementary children with working parents.
- A Healthy Start:
- Conduct an "Aim for Success" workshop on abstinence for youth in your organization.
- Organize and conduct a teen parenthood workshop (Parenting Center).
- Organize and conduct an exercise and diet workshop.
- Hold Bike/Fair Clinic to teach children bicycle safety and basic repairs.
- Organize a school eye clinic fair for youth
- Marketable Skills:
- Organize and conduct career fair or workshop for youth.
- Organize and conduct a family centered workshop on English as a second language.
- Organize and conduct a life-skills workshop for alternative high schools.
- Organize and conduct a service learning opportunity for students.
- Organize an earh science courtyard for school.
- Opportunities to Serve:
- High School Key Club provides reading clinic for grade school class.
- Help build home ramp for wheel chair bound person to get in and out of house.
- Youth visit and provide program for nursing home.
- Senior scout community service projects are expanded with grant resources.
